NBA coaches famously say: “You can’t teach height.”
What they mean is: In professional basketball you might be talented, work incredibly hard and yet, if you’re only 5.5 feet tall you simply have a massive disadvantage against the 6.7 feet average player.
“In basketball they say: You can’t teach height. In business it’s: You can’t teach heart.”
The analog for your business is heart. You want and need people with heart on your team. People who live, breath and deeply believe in what you’re doing. People who go out of their way to do what’s right for the company. That’s heart.
You can’t teach heart.
So better make sure that the people you hire and the people who surround you have heart to begin with. Knowledge can be accumulated, skills can be taught. Heart? Not so much.
