Intentional Serendipity

By now you should know that typically luck is made (and not a random thing). Or as Seneca the Younger once said “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

Preparation is all the hard work you do beforehand; the sleepless nights, the long hours debating and prototyping, the thousands of emails and the hundreds of customer interactions.

Opportunity is something completely different. You can chose to wait for opportunity to happen (what some would call “serendipity”) or you can be intentional about it (what I call “making rain”).

Once you’ve done your homework you need to put yourself out there — meet with people, spread the word, go to conferences, work in places where likeminded people hang out, talk, call, email, text, Twitter, Facebook… do what is necessary to create intentional serendipity for you and your company.

You don’t win your battles by sitting behind a desk staring at your computer.
